Collections Intern
The overall goal of the collections internship is to gain an understanding and gather experience in collections management and curatorial research within a museum environment. In addition, interns in collections management will learn proper object handling methods, re-housing, and documentation of the collections through cataloging and digitization. Other projects may include research projects within the collection and on policies and procedures.
*This is an unpaid internship and is located in our Oklahoma City, OK offices.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Improving and adding catalog database information
- Digitizing collections
- Inventorying
- Curatorial research and label writing
- Assisting with registrar work in the following areas: acquisitions, documentation, preservation and protection, access and use of the collection
Education:
- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
Qualifications:
- Must be highly sensitive to the necessity of confidentiality
- Must be extremely detail-oriented
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Possess the ability to see projects through to completion
- Ability to work well both with others and independently
- Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy objects
- Ability to crouch, climb, balance, sit, and stand for long periods of time
- Ability to safely handle and transport artifacts
- Familiarity with database programs like Excel or museum collections database programs
- Basic knowledge of history and/or an interest in museum studies preferred
- Some experience/knowledge of digital photography and/or previous office or museum experiences
Skills:
- Demonstrated research and writing skills
- Detail-oriented
- Strong organizational skills
- Able to work effectively as a team member or independently
- Proficient computer skills
